With the popularity and rise in real-time text-based communications, such as instant messaging, e-mail, Internet and online gaming services, chat rooms, discussion boards and mobile phone text messaging (SMS), came the emergence of a new language tailored to the immediacy and compactness of these new communication media.
If you have ever received an instant message or text message that seemed to be written in a foreign language, this Webopedia Quick Reference will help you decipher the text chat lingo by providing the definitions to more than 1,000 chat abbreviations.
One comment we hear from our readers is, "It's impossible that there are so many abbreviations!" While it does seem amazing that there are more than 1,000 text messaging abbreviations, it's important to remember that different chat abbreviations are used by different groups of people online.

With the popularity and rise in real-time text-based communications, such as instant messaging, e-mail, Internet and online gaming services, chat rooms, discussion boards and mobile phone text messaging (SMS), came the emergence of a new language tailored to the immediacy and compactness of these new communication media.

One comment we hear from our readers is, "It's impossible that there are so many abbreviations!" While it does seem amazing that there are more than 1,000 text messaging abbreviations, it's important to remember that different chat abbreviations are used by different groups of people online.
Some of the following chat abbreviations may be familiar to you, while others may be foreign because they are used by a different group of people with different online interests and hobbies than your own. For example, people playing online games are likely to use chat abbreviations that are different than those used by teenagers texting on their cell phone or abbreviations used by someone updating a financial blog.
If you know of a text or instant messaging abbreviation that is not included in our list, please let us know. Online auction abbreviations and the Smiley Face Guide are in a separate Webopedia Quick Reference.

Online Auction Abbreviations
Part III: A Guide to Understanding eBay & Auction Acronyms

With the growing popularity of online buying and selling, Internet and online classified lingo has also grown. Being an eBay buyer long before a seller, I was often confused as to what some of the abbre-viations actually meant. For some time I attributed it to a seller's unwillingness (or laziness) to use proper words when listing an item. When I put my first item up for sale on eBay I immediately under-stood the importance of using abbreviations in the listing.
In auction listing and in online storefronts, sellers are limited to a maximum number of characters in their item title. For classified ad sellers, you're often limited to a set number of characters in your de-scription. Abbreviations and acronyms on eBay and other sites are important to sellers as they allow you to say as more about your item for sale without going over the character-length requirements. For example, if you want to tell prospective buyers that your item is available for local pick up only then to add that to your title you are looking at 18 characters (including spaces). Using the abbreviation of LPUO instead of typing it out leaves you with an additional 14 characters in which to highlight other features of your item.
Classified Ad providers may require you to use very specific abbreviations that include a set format for capitalization and punctuation. For online classifieds you should check that specific Web site
for a list of accepted abbreviations.
The following list of abbreviations are widely used Internet abbreviations and acronyms found on eBay and other online marketplaces, including eBay alternatives. If you know of an online auction or classifieds abbreviation that is not included in our list, let us know.
